Outdoor Fall Decorations

Some seasons are just worth decorating for inside and out. As the weather turned slightly chilly earlier this week, I decided to add a few outdoor fall decorations to fall-ify the exterior of our house since the trees have yet to turn.

When driving up our street, our garage is prominent because how our home is positioned. I’ve always preferred concealed garages or carriage houses {who wouldn’t?}, but to make the most of it, we painted the garage doors the same color as the home to minimize them and added copper lighting between each stall to add a little character.

Last summer I added gardenia topiaries between each garage, but since we frequented the lake this summer, I decided to not to do them again. They required frequent watering. When I went to Whole Foods earlier this week I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of pretty plump mums – for just $5/each and am putting those pretty planters to work once again!

I’ve often been guilty of buying flowers that never make it into the dirt, so here’s my little secret about planters – if they’re temporary, you don’t have to actually plant them! Just fill the pot with crumbled bags or newspaper and drop the plastic container in! Voila! Now we just have to hope I can keep the girls motivated to water them. I water 3 kids and a dog, I can’t be held responsible for potted plants, too!

A couple of heirloom pumpkins to both sides of the garage make the perfect outdoor fall decorations without a lot of time or expense. I plan to use these on our breakfast room table when hosting dinner in a couple weeks. Heirloom pumpkins are so easy to repurpose.

A few simple additions make a big impact – so much so that Chris noticed when he came home Wednesday! He didn’t even notice when I cut several inches of my hair. While I find blogs and magazines inspiring, it’s also easy to get caught up in comparison of all the over the top beautiful decorating ideas. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, remember there is beauty in simplicity and if you don’t find time to decorate, nature will do it for you.
