Tips and FAQS

Because the world of outdoor fabric (and performance fabrics) can be a little confusing, we’ve carefully curated this guide to showcase only highly rated fabrics that are sold by the yard and rated for outdoor use!

Tips

  • I am always drawn to soft pastel colors (and my favorite shades of blue) so that’s what I’ve curated here. However, many of these outdoor fabrics are available in several unique color ways!
  • Carefully read the specifications on any fabric you’re considering. While many fabrics are outdoor safe, there are more specific guidelines for performance fabrics! Many brands can even be cleaned with bleach, so be sure to do your research.
  • Think of it this way: Some performance fabrics can be used outdoors, but all outdoor and performance fabrics can be used indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between outdoor fabric and performance fabric?

While performance fabrics are generally rated for outdoor use, they are also specifically formulated for stain, mold and mildew resistance. In some brands of performance fabrics, the color is so deep at the core of the fiber that they can even be treated with bleach!
Outdoor fabrics, on the other hand, are simply fabrics that can better tolerate damp and sunny conditions by resisting moisture and fading.

Which is better, performance fabric or outdoor fabric?

Generally speaking, outdoor fabric *is* a type of performance fabric. The difference lies in the quality. Often, the higher price point brand name performance fabrics will be a better quality than lower priced options that use some of the same terms.
