Apple Fritter French Toast Ingredients
For French Toast
- Apple Fritter Bread – Purchase Archer Farms at Target, SB Apple Fritter Bread at Giant, or you can use apple fritters purchased in the bakery of your grocer. You can also use this Apple Cinnamon Bread recipe.
- Eggs – a requirement for french toast. It builds that thick, craveable crust!
- Half and Half – I find half and half, rather than cream or 2% makes the best custard for the toast. But you can make this French toast with whatever you have on hand. It browns evenly without being soggy in the middle. You can use skim milk, whole milk, almond milk, coconut milk and achieve amazing flavor.
- Vanilla – I like to add a little vanilla extract for added flavor.
Orange Butter
- Butter – Use softened butter so that it’s easy to combine. Unsalted is preferred.
- Grand Marnier – An orange liqueur that really adds a hit of flavor.
- Sugar – Use a fine white sugar so that it dissolves easily.
- Orange Juice – Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor. You can also add the zest for a thicker butter and more robust flavor.
How To Make Apple Fritter French Toast
- Make The Butter – Combine ingredients until well incorporated.
- Make the Custard – Also known as egg wash. Combine egg, milk and vanilla in a baking dish to minimize cleanup.
- Soak – Add the bread and soak for 20 seconds on each side.
- Fry – In a non-stick pan, skillet or griddle over medium heat cook about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Serve – Serve immediately with the sweet orange butter.
Tips
- Mix The Custard Well – Be sure to whisk together the ingredients for the custard together really well so that everything is well combined. Make sure that there are no egg whites visible.
- Don’t Under-Soak The Bread – You need to allow the bread to soak up the liquid, so it gets a soft an custardy center. Let it sit for at least 20 seconds, and apply a little pressure with your hands to soak up as much as possible.
- Preheat Your Pan – Make sure your pan is hot when you put in the bread, otherwise the custard will seep out. The pan shouldn’t be so hot that it burns the outside before the middle has had a chance to cook.
- Minimize Cleanup – Mix custard in the dish you’ll be dipping bread in!
