Why You’ll Love it
- The easiest dinner
- Done in less than 10 minutes
- So easy to customize
- Grilling creates the best crunchy charred bits
- Perfect weeknight meal
Ingredients
- sourdough bread – Or whatever crusty bread is your favorite. Choose something strong enough to hold up to a wide array of toppings. Read more about the Best Bread for Grilled Cheese.
- gruyere – This is a delicious cheese with a great melting quality, but feel free to choose your favorite cheese, too.
- caramelized onion – learn how to caramelize onions, it’s so easy and they add such an incredible flavor to this sandwich and a variety of meals.
- prosciutto – you can also use ham, salami or any other shaved, dry cured meat.
- granny smith apple – sliced. This is the best unexpected sweet and sour addition of crunch in this sandwich- don’t skip it!
- butter – I always prefer salted butter for our grilled cheese sandwiches.
How to Make
- Heat your grill to medium.
- Butter bread and add gruyere, onion and prosciutto.
- Close the lid for a couple minutes, checking frequently – this will allow the cheese to melt.
- Add thinly sliced apple, close and then slice to enjoy!
Test Kitchen Tip
The key to a great grilled cheese is great bread. Sourdough is always delicious! Read more about the Best Bread for Grilled Cheese.
Another important component is fresh grated cheese.
- Choose a variety of cheese that melts well (gruyere, gouda, swiss and cheddar are all favorites).
- Pre-grate your cheese in a bowl – believe me, it’s worth the three extra minutes.
- Block cheese is always a higher quality than pre-shredded cheese and it doesn’t dry out.
- Grill low and slow on medium. This will prevent the bread from burning while allowing the cheese to melt to a nice gooey consistency.
