  • learn how to create a beautiful hors d'oeuvres bar from entertaining expert Julie Blanner

When we were looking to purchase our home, one of the best selling points was the proximity to a local market. At a previous home, in Prairie Village, Kansas, I would walk Adalyn to the market daily to purchase wine & groceries for that evening’s dinner. It was my grocery shopping, exercise & outdoor time all in one. I enjoy preparing fresh meals, & honestly, I can’t commit to what I’ll be in the mood for a week prior to making it. I don’t go quite as often now, but I enjoy walking the girls to the market to select fresh & local fruits & produce. I love how they label the farms that they source each item from.

Dinner Party Ideas | use wine notes to help guests select their perfect glass

As you know, Chris & I love visiting California wine country. We love learning about wine, including how it’s made, where the grapes come from & how the regions & vineyards can greatly affect the wine. I like to apply the same concept at the grocery store, labeling the area the wine is from & a few details about it. You can usually pull the information from the winery’s website easily. I’m not as familiar with whites, so I find menu descriptions very helpful when making my selection.

wine corks make beautiful place cards & menu notes

Using a knife, I made a slit in the wine cork to hold the card & added a bloom & snip of rosemary to keep it from rolling.

To keep entertaining effortless, mix & match glasses & pull from items around your house

Don’t be afraid to mix & match glasses. Most don’t have a catering closet. Personally, I think it adds interest to a table to have a variety of glassware & it can make a gathering feel slightly relaxed.

Using a cake platter, cheese & grapes become a gorgeous centerpiece

When served on a cake pedestal, a cheese plate can double as a centerpiece! I just nestled in few Creative Candles between champagne grapes which draped over the edge. The crostini bar is full of edible decor including herbs from the garden.

Dinner Party Ideas | set up an hors d'oeuvres bar with edible decor

I always enjoy when you can create your own food at dinner parties. I’m a picky eater & appreciate being able to select my favorite combinations, plus I think it’s fun! Did you know you can participate in creation of wine through La Crema’s Virtual Vintner? As a wine lover, I’m obsessed. It’s an opportunity to learn about the wine & vote to determine what region it will come from, what type of barrels will be used & more!  Weigh in here to create a community wine. I learned that while I love reds, I’m a chardonnay! Who knew? You can also read more about the crostini bar here.

I pulled the antique desk from our kitchen {originally a kitchen table} & used an inexpensive cheese cloth for a last minute table cloth. This harvest table is perfect for fall entertaining.
