traditional Christmas decorating ideas | hanging stockings from the banister

Hello, welcome friends! I’m so happy you over today to see our home decked for the holidays. I want to take a moment to thank the always stylish Lindsay of White Buffalo Styling Co for inviting me to join her tour again this year. If you haven’t stopped by to see her home yet, please do! It’s always inspiring.

As I write, I’m sipping on a cup of pink hot chocolate, which has become a favorite in our home and listening to some holly jolly holiday tunes. I usually coordinate our entire home for the holidays, but this year, I decorated some rooms in soft winter hues and others in classic Christmas colors. Why? Because I can. I love both and didn’t want to decide between one or the other, so I didn’t.

As you know, I don’t tend to go overboard when decorating for the holidays. I add a fews hints of Christmas in each room, finding beauty in simplicity.

In the entryway, I hung a fresh cedar and fir garland, allowing it to drape naturally around the base of the stairs. I nestled stems of blue juniper berries into the garland for a little added color and texture. From the moment you open the door it smells like Christmas!

I carried the soft blue and green hues into the adjoining family room with our Concord Christmas tree, which smells like fresh oranges and velvet pillow covers I’ve used in various winters, springs and falls over the past 5 years. A vase filled with long-lasting juniper branches fill my heart with joy. Photos coming soon…

I decorated our living room in beautiful blush tones as a nod to our 3 little girls. It feels so lighthearted and whimsical. You can see more of our living room and get all of the details here.

Can you find the red marble? My guess is that it’s from a Hungry Hungry Hippo game. I left it in for sake of authenticity.

Before we change color palettes, I’ll take you upstairs to our bedroom. It’s been a work in progress over the past couple years {and still is}, but I’m so excited that it’s almost complete. I think your bedroom is one of the most important rooms to decorate in your home – it’s the first room you see when you wake and the last when you fall asleep, so make it dreamy. I found this darling miniature cedar tree at Lowe’s a few weeks ago, covered in tiny plastic ornaments tied on with twist ties {the horror!} I had to save it. I just had to. I planted it in my pretty brass bucket that is usually found in the entryway and it’s found a safe haven in our bedroom.

Since I haven’t finished decorating our bedroom yet the wall behind is a blank slate. I hung a wreath filled with fir, cedar, juniper, white berries and pine cones. It’s SO pretty, my photos don’t do it justice.

This year I hung the stockings upstairs. I love seeing the girls’ faces light up with joy when they discover their stockings and thought it would be fun for them to see when they walk out of their bedrooms. Plus, the hall needed a little Christmas, too. Any day now our new brass lights will arrive – so maybe I’ll have a little surprise of my own!

Since fall has been overstaying its welcome {really just for outdoor photos, I’ll take the warmth any day}, I added magnolia branches in the mudroom. They transition from fall to winter flawlessly.

I hung a cozy plaid wool throw to grab for the occasional golf cart ride, but the highlight of our mudroom is the pretty plaid pillow cover, one of my few non-fresh purchases this Christmas.

Finally, our little powder room. Nothing fancy, just a few magnolia leaves that make our home feel a little festive, without the fuss.

  2. Your home is lovely! Also. I have to ask about the shawl? that is hanging on the middle hook in your mudroom. Is that what it is and would you share where you got it?

    1. It sold out. I actually ordered another throw as well (that was even prettier) and they sent me an email that it was no longer available. I’m sorry!
