Too much time at home is a dangerous thing. It gives you time to think, create and bake. Honestly, I shouldn’t be trusted. There’s something therapeutic about baking. In a short period of time you feel a sense of accomplishment and delicious satisfaction.
Last week I had an idea – what if I added cocoa powder to my melt in your mouth sugar cookie dough to make chocolate sugar cookies? It was a risk, because I don’t like to waste cookie dough, but it was one that paid off! I made chocolate sugar cookies and iced them with my creamy buttercream icing for all of you chocolate lovers. You can even bake this dough into a sugar cookie cake if you’d like.

Chocolate Sugar Cookies Make Great Gifts
Cookies are a known stress reliever in our house. One bite in and I immediately feel at peace. I liken it to sipping a glass of wine. Fortunately I had a share plan in mind for these chocolate sugar cookies because we all know I don’t need a few dozen of them at my fingertips! We’re excited to welcome new neighbors and there’s really no better way, right?
These are great to take to cookie exchanges over the holidays and to give as gifts to friends and family. You can of course save them all for yourself too!
The Best Buttercream Icing Recipe
This buttercream recipe that I used is my go too. It’s perfectly creamy and light, and works so well with these delicious chocolate sugar cookies. I chose to add red food coloring to this batch, isn’t the pink and chocolate combination pretty for Valentine’s Day or Christmas? You can of course use any color you like!
You can add 1-2 drops of coloring to the buttercream and spread it on the cookie, or warm it 30 seconds and pour it on the center of your cookie to create a smooth, pretty pool of icing. Either way, you can’t lose!
The Best Ever Sugar Cookie Recipe
I can’t tell you how tasty these chocolate sugar cookies are! They have just the right amount of crunch to them but remain soft in the center. I love topping them with the buttercream, but you can totally leave them un-iced. They are perfectly chocolatey and they simply melt in your mouth.
