I love having these traditional cream cheese mints at home during the holidays. They are so perfectly creamy and sweet, and of course, it is the season of peppermint! I love making a big batch and placing them in bowls for friends and family to help themselves too.

These mints are also perfect for gifting throughout the season, just place in a cellophane bag and decorate with ribbon and a name tag for a delicious homemade food gift.

To Make These Cream Cheese Mints, You Will Need:

  • Cream cheese:  The cream cheese should be softened so it’s easier to mix, and it’s best to use full fat for the riches flavor. Check out my tips for how to soften cream cheese!
  • Butter: The butter in this recipe makes this mints simply melt in your mouth. Use softened and unsalted butter.
  • Peppermint extract: Use extract rather than essence for this recipe. Essence is much stronger in flavor, so if that’s all you have you won’t need as much.
  • Powdered sugar: Also known as confectioner’s sugar, it makes the mints perfectly light and fluffy!
  • Food coloring: Add the food coloring in a little at a time until you reach the desired brightness. Use whatever colors you like! It’s best to use a gel or paste food coloring so you don’t add to much liquid to the mixture.

How Long Do Cream Cheese Mints Last?

If left at room temperature, the mints will last for about four hours before they begin to get too soft. They will keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for as long as the cream cheese is good. Just check the expiration date on the cheese for the maximum storage time.

    1. Hi Sue,
I haven’t tested that in this recipe, so be sure to report back if you try it! Generally, I’ve read that you need about ¼ teaspoon essential oil for every 1 teaspoon of extract in baking.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy,
      Julie

    2. I am correcting the amount of powdered sugar if you are using 8 Oz of cream cheese you will need 8 cups of powered sugar. 4 ozs of cream cheese and 4 cups of powered sugar! Also if you use liquid food coloring only use 1 drop at a time and you will need to add a little more powdered sugar to the colored mix, this will not affect the taste! The mix should be the consistency of play dough!

    1. Hi Michele,
Sorry I am just now seeing your question! This recipe makes approximately 36 mints.
      Enjoy!
