Hugo Spritz, anyone? Enjoy my favorite classic cocktail with me! I’m celebrating with a Hugo Spritz – an iconic St. Germain bubbly cocktail infused with mint and lime. Those flavors, in combination with the sparkling Prosecco and elderflower (thanks to the St. Germain) create a cocktail that speaks to spring and summer. It’s refreshing and delicious, and I think you’re going to love it too!

I currently enjoy a glass of Prosecco even more than my long-loved red wine. In fact, I’ve become a big fan of those bubbles, and even more so when I upgraded them with a little St Germain! There’s just something about that refreshing combination that has my heart. With that in mind, I order a Hugo Spritz any time it’s on a bar menu. I love the combination of lime with the hints of floral and bubbles.

This cocktail feels a little feminine thanks to the floral notes, and it has just the perfect amount of sweetness that is balanced by the lime. It’s become one of my favorite drinks ever! Much like a mimosa, it’s perfect for celebratory occasions, or any day I want to sip something that feels fabulous and a little special.

Make one, or make a full pitcher – cheers to that! I’ll show you how!

Ingredients, Substitutions and Variations

  • St Germain – Though this brand is our longtime favorite, any elderflower liqueur will do. St. Elder is another option, and a touch less expensive.
  • Prosecco – We love a Prosecco (or any kind of sparkling wine) in this cocktail, but you can use your favorite bottle of bubbles. Our favorite brand is La Marca – great flavor and a great price point, too. Make a Rosé Spritz for a fun variation too!
  • Club Soda – Choose your favorite type of sparkling soda here! We love the Fever Tree brand for cocktails, but any will do. You can even mix it up and top your Hugo spritz with a flavored sparkling soda if you’d like.
  • Fresh Mint – Release the oil in the mint leaves by stirring them a bit with the St-Germain, to make your cocktail even more aromatic.
  • Lime – Lime can act as a garnish in this cocktail, or you can choose to muddle it a bit to be more lime forward. The choice is yours!

Tips from my Test Kitchen

Don’t muddle your mint for this cocktail (it makes the mint a little bitter). You can, however, stir the leaves a bit with your spoon to release the oils.

For more lime and mint infusion in your spritz, add the wedge of lime to the base of the glass with the mint leaves, and stir them together a bit. Then, add ice and pour the ingredients over this base.

Julie’s Tips

Don’t muddle your mint for this cocktail (it makes the mint a little bitter). You can, however, stir the leaves a bit with your spoon to release the oils.
For more lime and mint infusion in your spritz, add the wedge of lime to the base of the glass with the mint leaves, and stir them together a bit. Then, add ice and pour the ingredients over this base.
The sweeter bottle of bubbles you choose, the sweeter your cocktail will be. Choose a dry Prosecco or Rosé for a good balance.
Want to make a pitcher? Use a full bottle of Prosecco (30 ounces), 12 ounces (1½ cups) of St-Germain and top it with 24 ounces of club soda. Add the Prosecco and club soda just before serving.

One word! Heaven!!! We had guest over for July 4 and planned to entertain on our deck overlooking the pond, but it was oppressively hot and our outdoor ceiling fans stopped working. We gathered in the kitchen and I poured everyone one of these drinks and suddenly no one seem to care that we were sitting outside on the deck. it was light and refreshing and it went well with our menu. I also like the fact that it was extremely easy to make.
