Today, we took a step back in time when we entered the quaint Dutch Village in Holland, Michigan and it didn’t disappoint! Honestly, I was slightly afraid Chris would laugh at me for coming up with such an idea to do on vacation as we turned past the Sam’s Club to check out the little amusement park, but we were pleasantly surprised! It’s the stuff childhood memories are made of. I’m pretty sure the girls will reflect back on their visit with something like “remember that time mom and dad took us to a place that was like another country, but in the US and we slid down a shoe and walked a goat?” It’s that kitschy little place that can make just about anyone smile.

For $40, we spent the day strolling through the village filled with little streams and plenty of ducklings, getting a small taste of Dutch culture. The girls watched a demonstration on how they make klompen, dutch dancers and even learned how to klompen dance with a beautiful organ.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a few rides, that we rode several times. On the ferris wheel you get a sneak peek at what the park has to offer, including the wooden shoe slide, Dutch chair swing ride and petting zoo.

Aside from the rides and seeing the girls gleam,  my favorite was walking a goat. How often do you have the opportunity to walk a goat? Annaliese kindly obliged as the girls took her for a stroll around the lake. She took a few snack breaks and needed a little coaxing from Ani, but overall it was a success.

Dutch Village is carefully orchestrated to optimize staff and experience. We spotted the klompen dancers handing out samples and offering cheese demonstrations at the cheese shop {which is a great place for a snack}, and at times in the afternoon you’ll find that one operator is alternating rides. I’d recommend arriving at opening for the best experience.

We spent nearly 3 hours at Dutch Village and only did half of what they have to offer. Personally, I think it offers something for all ages, but is a must see for families with kids 10 and under. Other activities include: zip line, maze, pedal cars, and candle carving.

If you find yourself near Holland, Michigan with kids, I highly recommend you take a step back into time.
