Mother’s Day isn’t just a day to celebrate your mom, but you & your friends who are mothers as well! A few weeks ago, I had friend & florist, Erin Volante over for an afternoon of flower arranging & fun! She walked me through the step-by-step to teach you how to arrange flowers, while Kristen Clayville shared in the laughs & captured it all! Whether you’re getting together with girlfriends, making an arrangement for mom, or filing this away for the next bridal shower you host, this tutorial will teach you how to make an arrangement in just about any container, even from a grocery store bouquet.
Select a vase. I have a theory that just about anything could be a vase {see the baby booties from Ali’s baby shower}. We chose a replica pink depression glass goblet for this arrangement to give it a little height.
supplies:
shears
flowers – today we’re using 4 varieties
vase
tape
Using thin strips of clear tape, create a grid on top. This is a great way to learn as a beginner & no one will know!
Remove greenery that will hit below the brim of the vase. Insert your first stem – notice how we start in the middle.
Work your way around with that same stem.
It’s time to add another variety.
Make the most from what you have! Notice Erin is snipping greenery from one of the flowers…
Use that to add another layer. Greenery gives an arrangement depth.
Working in a circular motion around the vase, continue to add one variety at a time.
With each one, using your vase as a guide, measure for height. Snip at an angle.
Have fun with it!
Continue to fill in as needed.
This is what I call a beautiful mess.
Take a peek at your design from every angle to make sure it’s balanced & that there are no holes to fill.
Erin added a gardenia, fresh from her garden, for a little something unexpected.
Use the extra blooms to fill bud vases – they’re perfect for bar carts, bathrooms & takeaway bouquets.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! It’s a great tool for gift giving & entertaining. You can create an arrangement like this in about 15 minutes. For more effortless entertaining ideas, follow me on Bloglovin, Facebook & Instagram & pin with me on Pinterest!

Thank you Kristen Clayville for capturing our fun both digitally & on film!
Thanks for the tutorial! Beautiful!!!
Thank you, Liz!
Just beautiful. What types of flowers did you use?
We used sweet peas, astilbe and scabiosa, however, this formula works for arranging all flowers! Enjoy!
Very pretty! I like the tip of working in a circle–that’s a great way to make the arrangement look beautiful from every angle. I love flowers and am looking for “formulas” to arrange them successfully every time, so this article is perfect! Thanks!
I loved this! Could you please tell me what kind of vase this is? It is lovely….
It’s just a pink glass goblet found on clearance for a couple dollars! Craft & thrift stores are perfect for “vases” like this.
I love the tape idea! I have never heard of that before, and it seems like it would make arranging the flowers so much easier. Thanks for the inspiration!
It does, Kari! Be sure to share the next arrangement you make!
