- Prep – Preheat oven. Line a jelly roll pan (or cookie sheet) with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
- Line with a single layer of saltine crackers. You can use Ritz crackers as well, but they don’t line up as well because of their circle shape. For a fun twist without the salt, you can even use graham crackers.
- Make Toffee Mixture – In a saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Bring to a boil – about 3 minutes.
- Pour mixture over the crackers and spread.
- Bake in the oven.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and smooth on top.
- Cut into squares or triangles when cool.
Optional: Sprinkle with sea salt just before chocolate sets…
or nuts…
or M&M’s – your choice!
Tips
- Use a heat-proof spatula to spread the layers.
- For the chocolate, we use a good quality semisweet chocolate chip because that’s what we tend to have on hand. You can use milk or dark chocolate if you prefer.
- Add a topping for a bright pop of color and fun flavor. Think candies, nuts, sprinkles, the options are endless.
- For faster set-up, you can throw the entire pan into your refrigerator!

If it’s a little chewy, that’s great – you don’t want it to be too hard, which makes it difficult to bite into it and enjoy. Make sure you’re boiling for long enough to allow the sugars to come together.
