Things to Do in Kansas City With Kids

I was recently discussing with a friend what we planned to do with our kids this summer.  While we all “know” what there is to do in our respective cities, it’s easy to forget or overlook some of the local gems.  I have created a comprehensive list of things to do in Kansas City this summer that can also relate to your own city!  Staycation, here we come!

Take a Stadium Tour:

Stadium tours are a great way to get a behind the scenes look of some of your favorite sports. The Royals offer a great tour of Kauffman Stadium perfect for any baseball lovers out there. The Sporting KC Livestrong Park also has an amazing tour if soccer is more of your thing. Even if your little ones are quite sports fanatics yet, these tours are still sure to wow your kiddos.

Take a walk for a Cause:

There are always all sorts of fun walks and runs going on in Kansas City, so you’re bound to find one supporting a cause you’re passionate about. We love taking the girls to the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, a walk/run to support breast cancer awareness. Here’s a good place to check for any of the events happening in Kansas City.

Amusement Parks & Activity Centers:

There’s nothing kids love more than a place to run around and live their wildest kid dreams, full of fast roller coasters and toys galore! Whenever I’m making my list of fun things to do in Kansas City with kids I never leave these amazingly fun kids attractions!

Worlds of Fun
Lego Land
Sea Life Aquarium
Paradise Park
Monkey Bizness

Go to the movies:

Kansas City has such an amazing selection of fun movie night events, especially in the summer. So, if it’s a nice night grab a blanket and some snacks and catch an outdoor movie night at your local shopping center, pool or city park. Also, there are always daytime specials at your local theatre and many offer free summer repeats.

Visit local businesses that offer tours or activities:

It’s not just the big stadiums that do tours. A lot of the local businesses provide a behind the scenes look as well. Here are some of the ones I think are particularly noteworthy.

Roasterie Tour
Harley Davidson Plant Tour {12 & up}
Kaleidescope

Take a cooking class:

If you have an hour or so to spare, and your little ones are old enough to navigate the kitchen, then I highly suggest a cooking class. Not only will your kids learn a fun new hobby, but you might even pick up some new skills along the way too. Some of the best local spots for cooking classes include;

Whole Foods
Hen House
A Thyme for Everything
Culinary Center of Kansas City

Cook at home with your kiddos:

An at home baking day is one of the best things to do in Kansas city with kids

If you already live in KC, or you’re staying in a place that has a kitchen, a fun-filled cooking day is a great way to spend some quality time with your kids. They get to learn their way around the kitchen, and show off their creation when they are done. End the day with some taste tests, and you’ll have a kitchen full of happy campers.

Simple Peanut Butter Cookies

Bread in a Bag

Pink Hot Chocolate

Strawberry Oatmeal Bars

Bubble Gum Ice Cream

Visit an outdoor store:

For days where it’s raining or just too hot, consider visiting an outdoor store like Bass Pro Shop or Cabela’s and playing “I Spy.” The stores are filled with animal displays and aquariums – perfect for at least 45 minutes of free fun!

Take a Tour of Parks:

Growing up, my mom and my best friend’s mom would take us on a tour of parks.  We would visit 3 parks in a day, making it a little more interesting!  Sometimes we’d only spend 20 minutes at a park, but we were delightfully anxious to hop in the car and visit the next one!  Finish the day with a picnic!  {p.s. you’re never too old to play!}. Here’s a list of all of the best kid friendly parks Kansas City has to offer.

Find fun in the water:

If it’s warm enough out take time to visit a local lake or beach {I just discovered a couple of local lake beaches!}. Kansas City, surprisingly has some great waterfront areas to enjoy. A picnic table beside the lake is the perfect spot for that post park tour picnic!

Parade of Fountains:

Living in Kansas City, we have a plethora of fountains.  After all, it is called the City of Fountains.  However, you can find plenty of fountains in your city-consider parks, malls, and businesses in your search.  Maybe you’ll even find a little luck!  Click here for more. Some of my favorite spots for fountains include; Crown Center, Spray Park at Loose Park, and Country Club Plaza.

Check out Local Museums:

The word museum doesn’t have to mean boring and not kid friendly. There are plenty of exciting museums included in the list of fun things to do in Kansas city with kids.

Miniature Toy Museum
Money Museum
Wonderscope
Steamboat Arabia {what kid doesn’t love sunken treasure?}
Science City
Kidscape
College Basketball Experience

Check out some animals:

If your kids are anything like my girls, then they are obsessed with animals! They are ecstatic anytime they get the chance to see an animal of any kind. So, naturally they love the Deanna Rose Farmstead, where they can animals, feed fish and goats, and play on the playgrounds, and the Kansas City Zoo is always on our summer list of activities!

Explore Outdoors:

Powell Gardens
Overland Park Arboretum
