The Right White Paint Colors

Simple living room decorations

I was beyond excited to see that Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is Simply White. Growing up, I always wondered why my mom painted the dining room, living room and kitchen different shades of “white”. At the time it didn’t make sense and when I moved out into my first college home, I quickly painted the walls a shade of beachy green. I quickly tired of it, but fortunately, I also quickly moved. That trend continued until 8 years ago when we moved into a home in Kansas and I painted the walls a soft burnt orange and quickly repainted them. While I loved the color, I preferred living in a home that feels bright, warm and calm. I reflected back on the house I grew up in and looked at it in an entirely different light. It was us, our friends and family that were the color in my childhood home. WE were the personality, WE were what made the home interesting and a neutral palette gave us the opportunity to relax and shine. White paint colors can feel warm, intimate and easily transition as both you and the seasons do. These are my favorite white paint colors that feel warm and welcoming…

White Paint Colors - the best white paint colors for a warm, neutral home

I haven’t tested Simply White yet, but from the photos shared, it appears to be dreamy! When we painted the interior of our house, we almost went with Navajo White for the main level. Instead we opted for Zurich White, which I love, but we plan to give the kitchen and sunroom creamier undertones with Navajo White after we renovate. Zurich, however is perfect for our living room, family room, office and entry. It works well with our traditional grey rug. You can see how we used these colors in our home here and here.

Congratulations to Benjamin Moore for being bold enough to select white in a world where bold is more notable. Do you love white paint colors and have any favorites?

  1. I was wondering where you purchased the rug…. the grey brown and yellow one in the picture with the circular brass side table.

  2. Beautiful shades, I would love to trade my old yellow-white for that “everyday white”. Gorgeous!

  3. Hi Julie – I couldn’t agree with you more about choosing white to paint the walls in a home. I grew up in a house with all white walls, too and it is the color I feel most comfortable with. So do my 3 siblings….they each have homes with shades of white on the walls. 🙂 The apples don’t fall far from the tree. 🙂

  4. I love BM Swiss Mocha. It’s a creamy white that is so warm and inviting!

  5. Oh, I meant BM Swiss Coffee! Coffee, mocha–they both sound delicious, ha ha.

  6. Hi Julie! I really love the round brass end table next to your white chair. Where did you find it?

  7. Hi Julie,

Which paint do you like best for washability, touch ups in high traffic areas, with kids, etc.? Thanks!!

    • A semi-gloss is easiest, but I use eggshell and when it’s had one too many touch ups, I feather over another coat of paint to blend. Whites don’t change as much over time as other colors do, so it always seems to blend well.

  8. Our bedroom is currently BM Simply White! It’s white but warm. I really like it for now. I love how calming and clean white feels while still being energizing and I need that in the mornings!

  9. Hi Julie,

I did major research when I bought my new apt 3 years ago! I looked at every white under the sun!! And in conclusion went with: Benjamin Moore White Dove!!

It’s perfect because it’s not too creamy… And not too blue (cold)! I have it in my ENTIRE home!! ????????????

  10. Do you have a white that you love for trim? We are getting ready to paint our bedroom Sea Salt and a darker grey in the dining room.

  11. I love the curtain rod in your living room. Where did you purchase it? My mom always painted the walls white as well and it looks like I’m heading in the same direction after many attempts at different colored walls that I get tired of so quickly.

  12. We built a French style home 2 years ago and painted almost the entire house Navajo White even the trim and doors. It is very calm and warm and I love the glow it gives during certain times of the day as the sun lights up the room. A whiter shade I also love is SW Ivory Coast.

  13. where is the gorgeous chair from?
