I’m kind of embarrassed to say this, but I realized one of the most important things in our home seriously lacked organization over the holidays – our paint colors! We’ve been remodeling our room room by room for many years, and the paint cans have gotten out of hand.

After Christmas, I decided that it was time to finish a few small projects and touch up the paint. So, I hired our trusty painter.

He pulled a couple gallons of paint and asked me which one. In preparation for Ani’s birthday party and the usual chaos of our days, I said “this one”. I thought it had to be it.

I should have looked at one of my posts because he painted the back corner of our home the wrong color and I have no one but myself to blame.

In the fall, Chris organized all of our paints and for the most part I know each color and room by heart, but somehow something went awry.

Each time our painter comes over I have anxiety that he’ll touch up with the wrong color, so I decided to create a paint color chart to organize them all and I thought you’d appreciate having a paint color chart as well.

You’ll find a column for the room, brand, color, sheen and notes. Yes, far worse things can happen, but in a world where I have a million balls in the air, I can rest knowing that I won’t continue running in circles around paint.

I’ve been working on mine this week. You can see the picture above for a sample of the printable and how I’m using it.

I plan to add the year each paint was purchased in the notes section.

I’ll be finalizing ours asap so that we don’t have any more mishaps. Here’s to a more organized (and less stressful) year ahead!

  1. What a great idea for keeping up with your home colours. We all got lost once when had to buy new paint, right? 🙂

Amazing colours to keep a stress-free, calmer life! <3

    Keep up the good work!

  2. It’s so easy to lose track of paint colors over the years. I’ve also seen the tip that Cindy mentioned above, but I prefer the ability to keep information digitally instead of cluttering up our home. This printable is perfect for that. Thanks so much!

  3. I just love this idea, Julie! I recently needed to touch up a bathroom ceiling and grabbed a can of “ceiling white” that was in with the paint supplies. What a surprise to find out that it did not match the ceiling at all! I now have spots on my ceiling and am going to have to paint the whole thing to get back to one color. UGH! How I wish I had kept track of my colors better! But from now on, I will use your chart and save myself a lot of work! Thanks!

  4. I make a color board for my clients but have never done one for my own home. Definitely something I’m going to work on.

  5. Julie, I saw something you might want to give a try. Someone took paint sticks dipped in paint, labeled them with the information you’ve listed, drilled a hole in the top and slipped onto a large key ring. I think they cut the paint sticks in half, but I can’t find the original post. I can see how one might be able to do the same thing with popsicle sticks, too.

I did what you did just a month or so ago after touching up some nail holes. We had several cans of paint, so I copied all the info down and included it in my expandable folder of info I put together when we moved in. It contains all our appliance info, subcontractor lists, etc. – everything I could think of to include not just to have at our fingertips but to pass on to the next owner if we ever move.

    1. That’s a great idea, too! I think this will work well for our painter and quick touch ups. I finished it and put it with all of the paint cans, which are also marked. I hope you have a beautiful weekend!
