A few months ago I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful Colonial House nestled in a suburb of St. Louis. Just a few years ago it was completed renovated and decorated to perfection with the end goal of creating a warm home for the family to enjoy with entertaining in mind. I think you’ll agree that they achieved that and so much more.

The house is filled to the brim with exquisite details, rustic modern finishes and a few equestrian hints that make my heart skip a beat.

The Office

Just off the entryway is a simple but modern office. The light gray walls are fresh and modern and offer the perfect juxtaposition with the traditional dark hardwoods, furniture and leather chair.

Entertaining Space

Across the office is one of my favorite rooms in the home. This space was originally the rarely-used formal dining room, but it was converted into a bar where friends and family gather.

The homeowners chose a rustic, country colonial look for the custom-builtins with black honed granite countertops. Again, the gray walls offset some of the warmth to bring a fresh, casual vibe to the space.

It offers plenty of seating as well as a TV for watching the game. A wine cooler, wine storage and variety of hard liquors ensure that guests will never go thirsty!

Formal dining rooms can have their place, but many modern design layouts no longer have them. In my opinion, this entertainment space is a much better use of space for the modern family.

Modern Colonial Style Kitchen

From there, you can make your way into the kitchen. Beams, subway tile, a copper sink, Wolf range and a custom barn wood hood give this kitchen a rustic modern look while still embracing traditional style.

The navy blue island is full of thoughtful storage, including the large drawer below that actually has multiple drawers inside.

Just behind it you may notice dual dishwashers – one to the left and the other to the right of the sink to expedite clean up for these entertaining enthusiasts.

The porch adds another space to kick back and relax. The firepit and swing that ensure the view of the outdoors can be enjoyed even in the dead of winter.

The Bathroom

The custom barn wood sink is another example of how the owners added rustic and modern touches throughout their house. These thoughtful design choices not only maintain the traditional charm but bring it into the modern era.

Modern Colonial Living Room

Finally, the living room was finished with coffered ceilings and custom wood bookcases to flank the painted brick fireplace. The rest of the room is kept warm and simple, with a neutral rug and couch and gray walls that tie into the gray tones of the fireplace.

The owners of this house have done an exceptional job of combining new finishes with old-world charm in this beautiful colonial house. It’s a great example of maintaining a warm, rustic country feel while still enjoying the new and shiny that come with a renovation.

  1. I must admit that Colonials have never been my favorite style of house. Maybe because they are so over abundant in my area (Richmond, VA) but when I see a colonial such as this one that has been updated and has such a fresh, modern feel then I cant help to re-think my choice.
From looking at realtor sites in the St. Louis area, the norm seems to be more wood stained cabinets and trim which is a nice change from all the white only cabinetry and trim on the East Coast that is so popular.

    1. I love Colonials, but I’m a traditional girl. While I love my cream cabinets, there’s something beautiful about natural wood that always captures my attention. What is your favorite style?

    2. Julie,
We have a Southern style Cape with a first floor master bedroom but my dream home would be a mid-century modern ranch with vaulted ceilings. They are not that easy to find in our area though. So many of our baby boomer friends who are empty nesters, have downsized to homes with either one level or first floor masters.

      1. I’d love a Southern Cape! I can see why you are drawn to Mid Century Moderns – I love the vaulted ceilings and especially like when they’re paired with stone fire places! Something so warm about them while being a little more open. I hope one day you find your dream home!
