Sometimes, I think it would have been easier to move out for 6 months and come home to a beautiful, completely renovated home, but since we’re paying for our renovations as we go, it’s not really an option. Renovating can be stressful, no matter how small or large but today I’m sharing some of my home renovation tips to keep it to a minimum:

  • Get at least 3 referrals and quotes from each. We found some contractors were more thorough than others and some were completely out of our price range for the same work. We vigorously reviewed them to find a happy middle.
  • Before you sign with a contractor, ask for a timeline of the project. I was surprised what I thought would take 2-3 weeks has taken over 2 months.
  • It’s the rule and not the exception to go over budget. Plan accordingly.
  • Whether you move yourself or hire movers, your furniture is bound to get a few new scratches. {Here’s how to disguise them}.
  • Guess what? Your walls are too. Factor in a small budget for touch up painting. Walls that were not included in our recent renovations need to be completely painted due to scuffs, bumps, etc.
  • Have a list of what is and is not going to be done so that there are no questions later. Often times, contractors aren’t on site.
  • Remember to look at the big picture and let go of little things that are not important. This will save you time, money and frustration.
