I’ve been making this brioche French toast since I took an after-school cooking class in second or third grade (wish my mom was here to answer these little questions).

It’s easy enough a kid can make it, but delicious enough to serve guests for a beautiful brunch.

The recipe includes all of the basics – eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla, but it’s the bread that takes it to a whole new level! Brioche is light and fluffy, allowing it to soak up the rich custard mix.

Fortunately, French brioche is easily accessible at most grocery stores, even Target and Walmart! I purchase pre-sliced to keep this recipe quick and simple.

The best news of all? I can make an entire loaf of Easy French Toast from start to finish in just 10 minutes!

Brioche French Toast Ingredients

  • Brioche – Pre-sliced brioche makes it so easy. It’s thick sliced and so decadent!
  • Eggs – We use size large, but you can use any type!
  • Milk – Whole or 2% milk is best, but you can use anything you have on hand.
  • Vanilla extract – Use the best quality vanilla extract you can find – or make your own homemade vanilla extract.
  • White granulated sugar – Makes this French toast recipe such an indulgence!
  • Butter – Salted works well here to balance out the sweetness of the brioche French toast, but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Variations

  • Use whole milk or even heavy cream for the milk requirement in this recipe, for even more decadence.
  • Replace the vanilla extract with almond extract for a unique flavor spin.
  • Use this cinnamon sugar recipe (as a sub for the sugar in the recipe) for a cinnamon flavored brioche French toast.

Tips

  • Mix up the custard mixture in the same dish you’ll be dipping bread in for easy clean-up!
  • Whisk the egg mixture ingredients together really well so that everything is well combined.
  • I like to quickly dip and flip bread in the egg mix, which keeps it from getting soggy or difficult to work with.
  • Make sure your pan is hot when you put in the bread for a perfectly caramelized French toast. However, the pan shouldn’t be so hot that it burns the outside before the middle has had a chance to cook.
  • Each time you add toast to the pan, lightly coat with butter.
  • I like to use a little butter, a drizzle of maple syrup and fruit to garnish, but powdered sugar is also a delicious option!
  • If you want a little fall twist, substitute salted caramel for maple syrup – you won’t be disappointed!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make brioche French toast not soggy?

Dip and flip it quickly! This keeps it from getting soggy. You can also give the brioche a quick run through your toaster before soaking in the egg mixture – this prevents it from soaking up too much!

What makes a brioche different than breads?

Brioche contains eggs, milk, and butter – whereas traditional sandwich breads often just contain flour, salt, yeast and water. That makes brioche higher in both fat and carbohydrates, which makes it feel like the ultimate brunch indulgence!

Made this for Saturday morning breakfast. So easy and delicious! I should’ve bought two loaves of brioche! Will definitely add this to the weekend breakfast rotation. Thank you Julie, for sharing!

  2. You are so right!  Brioche makes the best French toast!  I always add cinnamon, but I’ve never added vanilla. I’ll try that next time!  I think that can only make French toast better.
