Modern Kitchen in an Old House

Are you renovating a historic home? Or just in love with the look and style of these traditional beauties of days gone by? Take a photo tour of a modern kitchen in an old house – in fact, it’s a spectacular Kansas City mansion that has given new meaning to the idea of a modernized old home.
This limestone beauty is filled with clever kitchen ideas that incorporate new modern finishes while still retaining the spectacular beauty of the original features.

The style of your home decor does not have to be dictated by the style or age of your home and my visit to the Kansas City Symphony Designers’ Showhouse last weekend was a beautiful reminder of that.
I returned to our old stomping grounds Friday to visit with friends and take a sneak peek of the KC Symphony Designers’ Showhouse to share with you and it did not disappoint!

From the moment I walked in I was in awe of the talent and beauty that filled this year’s 108-year-old home {um… mansion might be a better term}.
It looks stately, resting on a hill overlooking a park nestled with blooming trees and lilac topiaries. I was anticipating traditional decor, but was pleasantly surprised to find that they had incorporated so many modern touches into this stately old home!
I’ve written about How to Make an Old Home Look New before, but this kitchen takes those ideas to a whole new level!

Modern Kitchen in an Old House
I stepped into the kitchen through the back entrance with original wood doors and windows with wavy glass and to my surprise it was filled with modern fixtures and cabinetry that felt beautiful curated!

Midwest Design Remodel worked with the homeowner to create the modern kitchen in an old house of their dreams.
They incorporated an oversized island and modern conveniences like a Semi-Pro kitchen faucet with SpeedClean technology that makes cleanup a breeze, along with a built-in coffee maker.

The kitchen also boasted a prep sink with a Minta pull-down faucet and a chef’s range for the homeowner, who was a recent graduate of culinary school.
Mixing traditional and modern elements makes the kitchen feel fresh and interesting.

Butler’s Pantry
The butler’s pantry not only has a wine dispenser, but a Blue Chilled & Sparkling Faucet – perfect for mixing cocktails, don’t you think? What a dream!

I have several friends with 100 + year homes that at times are conflicted with how they should decorate and I always remind them that it’s okay to blend new with old. If it’s something you love, chances are it will work in your home.

More Modern Kitchen Touches
I love how the designer added thoughtful details like this pretty door stop, relocated from a third level closet that was no longer needed.

They also hid an existing door and radiator by giving it a modern finish. Do you see it? So clever, right?
This kitchen actually features Overlay Cabinets, which is often less expensive than Custom Cabinetry. It’s a great way to get a customized look for less!

Below, you can see the easy, comfortable layout that leads into the butler’s pantry, which then leads into the formal dining space for entertaining.

Ready for the before? The original kitchen only had ONE drawer!

I look forward to sharing more of the Kansas City Symphony Designer’s Showhouse with you tomorrow! Wait until you see the master bedroom! Do you love perusing other’s homes for inspiration?
